How to Maintain Your Colored Hair

You did it! You’ve finally gone to the salon and have your dream hair color or gorgeous highlights. Your hair looks exactly how you want it, so now how do you maintain it? Getting your hair colored was a process you invested a lot of time and money in, so of course, you want it to last as long as possible. Keep your hair looking great with these tips:

  1. Wash your hair less frequently. We know. This is a pretty common tip that we bring up a lot, but washing your hair too much will fade your color pretty quickly.
  2. Use a shampoo and conditioner suited for color-treated hair. Going along with washing your hair less frequently, you will need to incorporate a shampoo and conditioner that is geared toward making your new hair color last as long as possible. Use a dry shampoo if you need to freshen up your hair between washes.
  3. Keep heat to a minimum. Frequent use of heat tools like blowdryers and flat irons are a no-no if you want to keep your color. Heat will strip your color much faster. You will also want to wash your hair in cooler water or use a shower cap if you like bathing in hot water.

You’ve spent a lot of time getting your hair done and we want to help you make sure your color lasts. If you are unsure about what products to use on your color-treated hair or want to know how to care for your specific hair type, feel free to contact us at (678)816-1654 or on our social media!

When to Shampoo Your Hair

You should always strive to have clean, healthy hair, but unfortunately, there is such a thing as shampooing too often. If you aren’t careful you can end up stripping your hair of its much-needed natural oils (sebum), making it dry and dull. The amount of times you need to wash your hair per week really depends on the type of hair you have. We can give you a consultation if you’re curious about beginning a regimen specifically for your hair type, but let’s go over some basics.

While natural oils are great, if you tend to have hair that gets oily pretty quickly, you’ll need to wash it more frequently (at least 2-3 times a week). Oily hair is more common in those with thin, straight hair types because oil is able to coat the strands more easily than it does with thicker hair types. Those with curlier, coarser hair types can go longer without washing (once a week or less) because it is drier and takes more time for oils to coat the scalp.

Of course, hair type isn’t the only factor you should be mindful of. If you exercise or sweat a lot, you will need to wash your hair more frequently than someone who doesn’t. If your hair is damaged you should minimize the number of times you are washing your hair a week. If your hair is chemically processed with color or a perm, you can also scale back on washes.

The bottom line is that everyone’s hair is different. What works for one person may not work for you even if you two technically have the same hair type. Factors like lifestyle and weather play a huge role in caring for your hair. Be ready to adjust your shampoo schedule as your hair changes.

If you aren’t sure what your hair type is, we are happy to help and give personalized tips for how to keep your hair shiny and healthy. Happy washing!

Hair Tips for Fall!

We here at Lookin’ Good Salon hope you had a wonderfully spooky Halloween!

We are now deep into fall and the weather gets cooler every week. With cooler weather comes drier hair and you may be struggling to keep your hair moisturized. Luckily there are a few things you can do to get rid of dryness:

  1. Wash your hair only a few times (2-3) a week. Washing your hair too frequently can strip it of its natural oils. You don’t need to wash your hair every day to keep it healthy and clean. Give your hair a break and see how much better it feels.

2. Limit the amount of heat you are putting on your hair. We love curls and blowouts as much as the next person, but using heat tools on your hair too often can do major damage. Letting your hair air dry and cutting back on the straightener will allow your hair to stay healthy.

3. Invest in a high-quality deep conditioner and use weekly. We highly recommend GK’s Hair’s Deep Protein Treatment Conditioner. Regular use will keep your hair soft and moisturized as we continue on into the winter months.

4. Use a leave-in conditioner. A good leave-in conditioner is essential to your hair health all the time, but especially during the fall and winter months. If you haven’t already, begin incorporating a leave-in conditioner into your hair care routine. We suggest GK Hair’s leave-in cream or spray.

5. Stay hydrated. This tip is often overlooked, but it is very important to drink enough water throughout the day. If you are dehydrated, your hair will be as well. Set reminders or carry around a water bottle so getting your daily recommended water intake will be easy.
